Hi Creatable community!
We’re sure you’ve heard of “connection” before. But today, we are going to dive deeper into what it truly means to be connected. This is an important one, because children need connection in their lives to grow. In the world we live in today, with things becoming more digital, connection is more important than ever.
Connection goes much deeper than social interactions. As defined by CreatableMe, connection includes a deep sense of belonging and understanding. This means a connection to oneself, others, the planet, and the universe. When you understand connection, you understand that everything is interwoven.
Why Connection is so Important for Children
Social and Emotional Development: Being close to people they care about, like family and friends, helps children learn important life skills. These include how to be kind, how to talk to others, and how to handle their feelings.
Sense of Belonging: When children feel connected to others, it makes them feel safe and happy. It’s crucial for their well-being and confidence.
Healthy Relationships: Building connections early in life lays the foundation for healthy relationships in the future, teaching children how to form and maintain positive bonds with others.
Cognitive Development: Meaningful connections with adults and peers helps children learn. It stimulates their mind, teaching them important skills for the future, like social skills, body language, and even problem solving.
Emotional Support: Connection with trusted adults provides children with emotional support and a safe space to express their feelings, reducing stress and promoting mental health.
Resilience: Strong connections with supportive individuals help children develop resilience, enabling them to bounce back from challenges and setbacks more effectively.
Positive Behavior: Children who feel connected and supported are more likely to exhibit positive behaviors, such as cooperation, kindness, and empathy towards others.
Sense of Identity: Connection with family, culture, and community helps children develop a sense of identity and belonging, fostering pride in their heritage and traditions.
Communication Skills: Interacting with others promotes the development of language and communication skills, essential for expressing thoughts, feelings, and needs effectively.
Healthy Development: Overall, connection with caring adults, peers, and communities provides children with the support, encouragement, and resources they need for healthy development across all domains: physical, cognitive, social, and emotional.
How to Add Connection to your Child’s Life

Fostering meaningful connections for your child is a great way to help them grow.
But where do you start?
We’ve come up with some strategies to help you implement connection into your child’s life.
Read below to learn these easy tips to help your children build meaningful connections.
Getting Started
Below we have 5 different strategies to help your kids build meaningful connections.
Family Memory Jar: The family memory jar is fun, and the kids will love it. Here’s how it works:
- Place a jar in a central location of the house
- Encourage family members to write down memorable moments on things they’re grateful for on a slip of paper
- Each family member should then fold the slip of paper, and put it in the jar
- You can do this as many times as you want, randomly throughout the day
- At the end of each month or year, gather together and read all of the memoriesStart a Family Garden: A garden is a great way to establish a connection with nature. It is also an opportunity for teamwork between members of your family. Here’s what we recommend:
- Dedicate a section of your yard or balcony to a family garden
- Involve your child in choosing plant seeds, watering plants, and watching them grow
- Depending on where you live, you can also try an indoor garden
- The garden can be as big or as small as you need itCreate a Nature Journal: A nature journal is a simple way for children to connect with the planet. This one won’t require your supervision, either! Here’s how to start:
- Give your child a journal or notebook
- Encourage them to write down their experiences outdoors
- They can write down observations, discoveries, and even adventures
- If you want to get creative with this, you can incorporate a point system for each observation, discovery, or adventure
- This is a great way to encourage your children to interact with nature moreStart a Family Book Club: A family book club is always a great way to encourage reading. No matter what reading level your child is at, there are many books available. Here’s how to get started:
- Choose a book for each family member to read
- Depending on the reading level of your children, different family members can read different books
- At the end of each month, gather together as a family and let everyone share their thoughts
- You can even make a sheet of questions to ask your family about the different characters of the books they read
- Optionally, you can encourage your children to invite their friends to join as wellRegular Hang-Outs: Try to make it a regular activity for your child to interact with other children. This is such an important way for your kids to build social connections. Here are our recommendations:
- We recommend children hang out with their friends at least once a week
- This can vary based on how social the child is, and how old they are as well
- The most important factor is making sure social activities are enjoyable for your children
- It’s great for parents to make friends with other parents, and let their kids hang out together
- This makes it a lot easier for you to plan consistent play dates.
These actionable ideas give you some great ways to get your kids to build meaningful connections in their lives. Remember, connection is not only about socializing. It goes much deeper than that. Children need connections with family, friends, nature, and even themselves!
